Once a must-have utility, now unreliable on certain Mac models. Very likely abandoned by the developer. Fortunately easily replaced by Macs Fan Control, a free, more configurable utility that enjoys active development.

When you use the direct link it gives you a .zip file, containing the .app file. Drag this to Applications, and youre good. It appears CNET put a trojan into their installer. Or at least a crap load of bloatware that the scanner figured as a trojan.

My processor speed slowed to an absolute crawl. I suffered for a week and finally uninstalled it. I looked for another option and found Macs Fan Control (CrystalIdea) and when I was setting the preferences, you could hear the fans ramp up. No matter what setting I chose smc, never heard a thing.

As with any settings-tinkering software, youll want to use smcFanControl judiciously–but fortunately this application always keeps fans in automatic mode (so speed will increase along with CPU load) and never lets you set the fan speed below the Apple-recommended minimum. This most recent version adds support for every current MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and Mini.
