IKEA HACK Easy Lamps

Going at a low speed on a drill press and using plenty of lubricant, a 1-1/4 hole saw was used to create an opening in the bottom of the colander. The same process was repeated on the stainless steel candle holders.

Ikea has plenty of things that can be turned into attractive lights. I loved the industrial look of the stainless steel colander, and turning it into a lamp was a breeze with IKEAs inexpensiveHemmalight socket set.

Oh how I need to live closer to an Ikea! 🙂 Love them all!

Thats okay, though. I got a book on electrical wiring and Im all set now. Thanks again for sharing your idea.

A handheld power drill will also work. Make sure to secure your work before drilling, it can spin out as you drill break through.

These look great. I have used old wire baskets in one room I decorated for a family and used the replica bulbs to add more character. Great post, thank you for sharing.

Repeat this same process with the stainless steel candle holders.

Useful where no ceiling box available though would look best with canopy and permanent install. Needs Led bulb! Great looking fixture as it easily adds to instead of distracts from decor. Gawd Awful Hampton Bay actually sells much worse for 4X your cost.

Youre always close to an ikea when you use their website (I like looking on there for things I really dont need, like their Tertial worklamps, got three of them cos theyre so cheap and useful!!)… 😀

The light socket set has a collar that threads into the neck of the socket. Unscrew the collar and feed the neck through the opening of the colander, then screw the collar back on the neck securing the socket to the colander. After, install a light bulb into the socket.

If I dont have a drill press can I use something else? I reallylovethese!

To hang your lamp youll need a ceiling hook or beam to drape the power cord through, then plug into the wall directly or into a power switch.

IKEA HACK Easy Lamps

At $15, this easy project can be remixed and remade in countless ways.

This is awesome. I have been on the lookout for metal bowls at thrift stores that I could cut designs into and turn into pendant lights but I never thought about repurposing things like candle holders and colanders.

Love it. The industrial look appeals to me and this is a great hack.

I love such IKEA furnishing hacks. Your final result looks awesome.

The IKEA Hemma lights plug into a wall socket, and can be hung by a ceiling hook.

You might want to try some Edison Bulbs in these for the look!

Hmm, looks like I stole your idea without knowing it. Just finished this today and now found your instructable while searching for a next project. 🙂

Okay! Good project but I am stuck as to connecting them to the ceiling if I want to replace the ceiling light. Can you give me a little schematic? Thanks.

Great ideas are hard to keep down! Looking good, and I love the light pattern on the ceiling.

This type of colander, bigger, in our village the women use to wash cloths in local stream. It works very well. Not in winter.

Thanks for getting back to me. I figured that what you were talking about were the plug ins but what if you got the fixtures for replacing a ceiling fixture.

I wanted to try a few different kinds of lights using this concept, so I grabbed a few types of stainless steel enclosures:
